Schools Receive Fire Prevention Week Bursaries

Released on December 19, 2013

Today the Ministry of Government Relations announced that Balgonie and Porcupine Plain elementary schools would each be receiving a $400 bursary for the purchase of educational supplies in recognition of their participation in the Fire Prevention Week Children’s Activity Program.

“We think that through this program, students along with their parents can learn important information about how to keep their homes and families safe from fire,” Fire Safety Commissioner Duane McKay said.  “It’s my hope that we can encourage everyone to become familiar with how to prepare for a fire, or any other potential emergency situation. That knowledge can go a long way toward the safety of you and your family.”

Fire Prevention Week occurs annually in Saskatchewan.  Nearly 30,000 Kindergarten to Grade 3 students from 211 communities across the province participated, reaching more than 70,000 Saskatchewan residents.  This year’s theme of “Prevent Kitchen Fires,” emphasized several safety tips children should keep in mind when in the kitchen.  During this years’ campaign, firefighters and educators spread the word about the danger of fires – most of which result from unattended cooking.  More than seventy per cent of fire-related deaths occur in the home.

“Fire safety activities in our schools help build awareness and develop skills in our youth that will inevitably save lives,” Balgonie Elementary School Principal Dion M. Hrynewich said.  “We are also very grateful for the $400 awarded to our school for educational supplies.  We will use this money to improve our school’s Grade One Literacy Library and will be sure to include books on fire prevention and safety.”

Students that participate in the program by completing a fire safety activity booklet, either at school or home, are entered into a draw to receive the bursary on behalf of their school.  One student from each school will also receive an Apple iPad for their participation.  The Porcupine Plain Elementary School is in the North East School Division # 200. Balgonie Elementary is in Prairie Valley School Division #208.
