More Fines in Saskatchewan for not Using Proper Fall Protection

Released on December 16, 2013

One company and one individual pleaded guilty to Occupational Health and Safety violations under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and have been fined for not using proper fall protection systems.

Saskatoon company 101176473 Saskatchewan Ltd., operating as Big Hammer Construction, pleaded guilty to one count of failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more.  The company was fined a total of $840 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on December 5, 2013.

One other charge against the company was withdrawn.  The charges stemmed from a routine inspection by an Occupational Health Officer that took place on November 1, 2012.

In an unrelated case, Mark Derbowka of Regina pleaded guilty to one count of failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more.  He was fined a total of $840 in Regina Provincial Court on December 10, 2013.

The charge came as a result of an inspection by an Occupational Health Officer that took place on July 25, 2012.

Occupational Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.  Last year, 33 per cent of all inspections were in the construction industry.
