Province And Habitat For Humanity Help Make Housing Dreams Come True For A Regina Family

Released on December 11, 2013

A Regina family received keys to their Habitat for Humanity home at a dedication ceremony held today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in funding assistance to help build the home located at 617 Wascana Street.  This is also the third Habitat for Humanity home constructed in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Depot Division in Regina.  Other supporters include The Mosaic Company and the City of Regina.

“We are proud to join hands with Habitat for Humanity and its partners to build homes for hard-working Saskatchewan families,” Regina Douglas Park MLA Russ Marchuk said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “Like Habitat, our government is committed to helping families put down roots and plan for the future.  Through strong partnerships and our Plan for Growth, we will continue to make affordable housing a priority across the province.”

“We are truly grateful for the support of RCMP Depot Division,” Habitat for Humanity Regina COO Rob Gartner said.  “Mountie House – Another Story, represents a partnership that is dedicated to the community by providing another Regina family with the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through homeownership.  Many partnerships completed this home – Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, Mosaic, RCMP and the City of Regina – along with all our volunteers worked together to build a home for the family.  These partnerships are key to deliver affordable homeownership in Regina and we are truly fortunate they are supporting families through Habitat for Humanity Regina.”

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.1 million since March 2009.  This total includes $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund, which will create sustainable revolving land trusts in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to assist in the purchase and development of land.

Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
