Regina Construction Company Fined For Occupational Health And Safety Violations

Released on December 9, 2013

Calvert Construction Ltd., of Regina pleaded guilty to two charges under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996.  The company was fined $760 in Regina Provincial Court on December 2, 2013.

The company pleaded guilty to:

  • contravening section 116(2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more); and
  • contravening section 93 of the regulations (failure to require a worker to wear industrial eye protection as required).

One other charge against the company was stayed.

The charges followed an inspection at a Regina worksite on November 27, 2012.  The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer, who was responding to a complaint, observed workers on a roof who were not using a proper fall protection system, or wearing industry approved eye protection.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood, and enforced.  Last year, 33 per cent of all inspections were in the construction industry.
