Court Imposes More Than $18000 In Fines For Safety Violations In Saskatoon

Wintringham Roofing Ltd., of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to eight charges under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and was fined $15,330 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 26, 2013.

The company pleaded guilty to:

  • six charges related to contravening section 116 (2)(a) of the regulations (failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $8,250 with a $3,300 surcharge; and
  • two charges related to contravening section 17(1)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $2,700 with a $1,080 surcharge.

The charges stemmed from six separate investigations by Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officers from January 2011 to October 2012 at worksites in Saskatoon.  Workers were observed on roofs without fall protection.  Eleven other charges were stayed.

In relation to the same incidents, Greg Wintringham pleaded guilty to one charge under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and was fined $840 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 26, 2013.  One other charge was stayed.

Mr. Wintringham pleaded guilty to:

  • contravening section 116 (2)(a) of the regulations (failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.

In relation to the same incidents, Al Stewart of Wintringham Roofing Ltd., pleaded guilty to two counts under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and was fined $1,960 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 26, 2013.  Two other charges were stayed.

Mr. Stewart pleaded guilty to:

  • two charges related to contravening section 116 (2)(a) of the regulations (failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $1,400 with a $560 surcharge.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood, and enforced.  Falls represent more than 12 per cent of all injuries reported in the construction sector.
