A $2.1 million improvement to the Laird Access road connecting the Village of Laird, north of Saskatoon, to Highway 312 is nearing completion.
"With one of the most ambitious Highways improvement budgets in Saskatchewan's history, we have allocated funds to the Laird Access road as part of the effort to improve access roads to small communities," Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Scott Moe said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. "This upgrade will provide residents with a safe, stable, dust-free road."
The 6 kilometre (km) access road will be upgraded from the existing combination of thin membrane surface (TMS) and gravel. Laird was one of the first roads to receive improvements under the Small Community and Tourism Access Road program, which makes funding available to provide residents safe and reliable access to their communities and Saskatchewan's tourist attractions. There are more than 1,300 km of access roads in the province.
"We appreciate the Government of Saskatchewan's investment to improve our access road," Village of Laird Mayor Doug Crowe said. "It's extremely important to have sufficient infrastructure in place to support the community's growth."
About 1,200 km of provincial highways are being improved this year, as a result of a $585 million Highways and Infrastructure budget, the second largest in the Province of Saskatchewan's history.
