CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN DAY PROCLAIMED IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on September 14, 2012

The Provincial Government has proclaimed September 14, 2012, as Canadian Federation of University Women Day in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is a non-profit, women's equality-seeking organization that works to advance the status and human rights of women and girls, as well as promote quality public education in Canada. The CFUW is comprised of almost 10,000 graduate women, students and associate members across Canada. There are more than 200 members in Saskatchewan.

In Saskatchewan, the CFUW provides approximately $40,000 in scholarships yearly to University students, as well as grants to music and science festivals, early learning centres and other community endeavours.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to declare September 14, 2012, as Canadian Federation of University Women Day in Saskatchewan," Advanced Education Minister Don Morgan said. "Our government understands the importance of post-secondary education and the scholarships and grants provided by the CFUW will help support women pursuing their post-secondary studies in Saskatchewan."

"Education provides women with economic security and the choice to follow any path in their careers and their lives," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women June Draude said. "Higher education leads to better job opportunities and higher earning potential. I applaud CFUW's efforts to encourage women to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist for them here in Saskatchewan."

"The CFUW of Saskatchewan are pleased that the Saskatchewan Government is again proclaiming September 14 as Canadian Federation of University Women Day," CFUW Saskatchewan Regional Director Marlene Chatterson said. "Clubs across the province will be celebrating their continuing work to provide scholarships, promote education, and work toward the goal of a peaceful, equitable, just and sustainable society at the provincial, national and international level."

Students can access information about the scholarships through their University. Grant information can be obtained from local community colleges, high schools, music festival committees or science fair groups.

Canadian Federation of University Women Day was first declared by the Government of Saskatchewan in 2011.
