GOVERNMENT PARTNERS WITH OFFICE OF THE TREATY COMMISSIONER

Released on June 18, 2012

At an announcement at the Meewasin Riverfront in Saskatoon this morning, Education Minister Russ Marchuk announced and celebrated a partnership between the Office of the Treaty Commissioner and the Ministry of Education.

This partnership will see the development of a historical, educational and commemorative instructional resource for students and teachers that will accurately depict the role the Dakota peoples played in the building of Canada, particularly as it relates to the War of 1812.

"All Saskatchewan people need to learn about and understand our shared history," Marchuk said. "With this partnership we can help to play a role in accomplishing that and work to build a knowledgeable and respectful community of students and citizens across the province."

"When I went to school we had never heard of the war of 1812," Whitecap Dakota First Nation Senator Melvin Littlecrow said. "With this resource, the students will get a chance to know some of our history - it's something that is very much needed in our schools. Our kids need to know their history and be proud of it."

This instructional resource, which is being led by the Office of The Treaty Commissioner, is expected to be completed and ready for use for the 2013-2014 school year.
