GOVERNMENT SEEKS CLARIFICATION ON FRENCH LANGUAGE EDUCATION
Released on December 17, 2012
The Government of Saskatchewan is requesting an advisory opinion from the Court of Appeal in relation to French language education in the province.
This stems from a difference in interpretation between the Government and the Conseil des écoles fransaskoises on how government meets the constitutional right to public funding of French language education. Similar challenges have been brought forward in other jurisdictions.
In an effort to find a resolution, the government has taken steps to request an opinion from the Court of Appeal, pursuant to The Constitutional Questions Act, 2012.
"It is our hope that the Court of Appeal will provide clarification for all parties and help resolve the differences of interpretation," Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said.
No date has been set yet for a hearing.
