QUEEN ELIZABETH II GARDENS REOPENED

Released on August 12, 2012

Today Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty was joined by Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield, Speaker Dan D'Autremont and Councillor Michael Fougere from the City of Regina to officially reopen the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

"Each year thousands of people from across the province and around the world visit these gardens in the heart of beautiful Wascana Centre," Doherty said. "In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, a number of upgrades were made to the gardens to create an even more enjoyable and accessible place to visit."

Upgrades to the gardens include the installation of new energy efficient lights, fully accessible paved pathways, new Tyndall stone benches, informative panels, an improved irrigation system as well as renewed perimeter landscaping. The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $921,000, Wascana Centre Authority $130,000, and the City of Regina $250,000 to make the upgrades.

"The City of Regina is fortunate and proud to have a beautiful urban park in the heart of the capital city," Fougere said. "We are pleased to contribute to upgrading and improving the aesthetic value of this popular tourist attraction."

The Queen Elizabeth II Gardens were renamed in 2005 in recognition of Her Majesty's strong relationship with the people of Saskatchewan. It seems fitting during Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee year and the 100th anniversary of the Legislative Building to celebrate these milestones with enhancements for the people of Saskatchewan and tourists to enjoy.

"Marking Wascana Centre's 50th anniversary with major enhancements to one of our capital city's most iconic vistas, the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens look amazing," CEO of Wascana Centre Authority Bernadette McIntyre said. "This special place is continually enjoyed and well-photographed by both Regina residents and by thousands of tourists annually. With this major refurbishment just completed, the jewel that is Wascana Centre shines that much more brightly."

This project is one of several being implemented throughout 2012 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.
