GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN DONATES $250,000 TO RED CROSS FOR EAST AFRICA RELIEF

Released on September 20, 2011

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert today presented a cheque from government for $250,000 on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan for the Canadian Red Cross's Horn of Africa drought appeal.

"The Red Cross reminds us that despite the distance between nations, or the differences between us, we are one world and we need to be responsible for one another - particularly in times of distress," Huyghebaert said. "That is why we are pleased to support their humanitarian effort in East Africa."

The Canadian Red Cross has assisted the province's emergency response to severe flooding in Saskatchewan, providing affected citizens with clothing and food, among other services and is now providing similar assistance to the people of East Africa.

"We appreciate the trust and confidence the people of Saskatchewan are showing in the Red Cross by providing this generous donation," Canadian Red Cross Provincial Director Cindy Fuchs said. "This support will help Red Cross provide food, clean water and medical assistance in the Horn of Africa and will also help reduce the region's vulnerability to drought in the future."

The Canadian Red Cross has committed $6.4 million to support relief efforts of the local Red Cross Societies in Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia as they help provide immediate life-saving assistance. The Canadian Red Cross will be investing 20 per cent of all Canadian donations to support long-term sustainable programming to help communities establish drought-resistant livelihoods including building water irrigation systems and to buy seed and alternate livestock.

To make a personal or corporate donation to the Canadian Red Cross, go to www.redcross.ca, call 1-800-418-1111 or contact a local Canadian Red Cross office.
