SASKATCHEWAN LOW-INCOME SENIORS MADE SAFER THROUGH HOME SECURITY PROGRAM

Released on May 9, 2011

Many Saskatchewan seniors will be resting a little easier with a new home security program from the province.

The Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing is establishing a home security program for low-income seniors and seniors who have been victims of home invasions. Under the program, for which $500,000 has been allocated out of the 2011-12 provincial budget, these individuals can take advantage of a free home security audit and free home security devices such as deadbolts, viewers, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

"Seniors are among the most vulnerable of our citizens," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "This government is pleased to be providing them the added protection and peace of mind that comes with working home security devices that they might otherwise be unable to afford."

Senior citizens will be able to access contractors pre-qualified by the province who will inspect their homes and arrange for the required security devices.

Prince Albert was selected to pilot the security initiative because of its high percentage of senior citizens that will benefit from the program.

Once it is rolled out province-wide, it is estimated that around 13,000 households will be eligible for the program.
