INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATED IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on March 8, 2011

International Women's Day, March 8, is an annual global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Events are held throughout the world to inspire women and commemorate their achievements, as well as to inspire future generations of women and girls. This year, Saskatchewan's theme is "2011 - A Celebration of 100 Years of International Women's Day."

"International Women's Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the diverse roles of Saskatchewan women in shaping the economical, social, political and cultural landscape of our province and to raise public awareness of women's equality issues," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women June Draude said. "It is also a time to reflect on the challenges and barriers that remain, and to consider future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives."

In Saskatchewan the Status of Women Office (SWO) in the Ministry of Social Services, through an International Women's Day Grant Program, is assisting 97 community-based women's organizations that will host 38 events throughout the month of March.

"Our government is pleased to support these rich and diverse local activities," Draude said. "They will strengthen the relationships of women's groups and community-based organizations who are working together to ensure that all Saskatchewan people have equal opportunity to contribute to, and benefit from, our strong economy."

"This is an important grant program," Fédération provinciale des Fransaskoises (IWD 2010) Executive Director Agathe Gaulin said. "It enabled our organization to support small rural communities and larger urban centres in organizing International Women's Day events in areas where such events could not occur. We thank the Government of Saskatchewan for continuing to support International Women's Day."

A complete list of the events being sponsored is available on the Status of Women website at http://www.socialservices.gov.sk.ca/keydates-specialevents.
