MINISTER OF LABOUR RELATIONS AND WORKPLACE SAFETY EXTENDS APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL MEDIATOR

Released on July 4, 2011

Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan has extended the appointment of Richard Hornung as special mediator until July 8, 2011 in a bid to end the contract dispute between the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation and the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee (Saskatchewan School Boards Association and the Government of Saskatchewan.)

Mr. Hornung has been working with both parties since his appointment by Minister Morgan on May 31, 2011, and had been scheduled to submit a report to the Minister and Cabinet by a June 30, 2011 deadline. That deadline has been extended to July 8, 2011.

"I'm hopeful that an agreement can be reached within this extended timeframe," Morgan said.

Mr. Hornung, Q.C. is a well-known and accomplished mediator, conciliator and arbitrator with a national practice based in Calgary. He is a former Chair of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board.

Under The Human Resources, Labour and Employment Act, the Minister has the authority to appoint an individual "to perform special duties in connection with disputes in industry between employers and employees or trade unions."
