The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed March as Rural Women's Month in Saskatchewan.
"While the make-up of rural Saskatchewan has changed considerably over the past century, the importance of rural women to the growth and development of this province and the agriculture industry remains as significant as ever," Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Women's Institute (SWI). Since its formation in 1911, the SWI has been involved with the development of women's leadership skills. The SWI has been a driving force supporting agriculture and the improvement of rural communities.
The SWI is Saskatchewan's largest rural women's organization. It is affiliated with the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada and the Associated Country Women of the World.
"Rural women have made a major contribution to the success of our province's economic and social development," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women June Draude said. "This month we celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of rural women past and present."
Rural Women's Month will be observed in conjunction with the United Nation's International Women's Day on March 8. Events will be held in March by various women's groups in communities across the province to recognize the contribution of rural women to the province and to raise awareness and appreciation of their role in Saskatchewan's development.
