MARCH MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS IMPROVE

Released on May 14, 2010

Statistics Canada released manufacturing shipment figures for March 2010 today that show Saskatchewan has improved considerably from last year.

In the report, Saskatchewan had an increase of 12 per cent in March 2010 over March 2009 (seasonally adjusted). That percentage increase was the third best in Canada.

"Manufacturing is one of our largest sectors, and has been impacted by economic conditions and a high Canadian dollar," Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "It is encouraging to see numbers on the rise, and that we are doing quite well in comparison with other provinces."

Manufacturing shipments increased 2.8 per cent between February 2010 and March 2010, sixth best in the nation (seasonally adjusted).

"This is just one more sign of a strong and growing economy in Saskatchewan," Cheveldayoff said. "Employment is up by nearly 9,000 new jobs. Housing starts are up more than 200 per cent. Exports are up over 14 per cent. And Saskatchewan's population recently hit an all-time high.

"Saskatchewan is moving forward and our government is taking action to make sure we keep moving forward."
