SASKATCHEWAN JOINS IN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Released on March 5, 2010

Saskatchewan is joining with the rest of the world in marking International Women's Day on Monday, March 8.

"Saskatchewan women make significant contributions to the province, their communities and their families," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Office Rob Norris said. "Today we celebrate their successes while we restate the need for equality for everyone."

International Women's Day (IWD) has been observed by the United Nations since 1975. The day is both a celebration of women's accomplishments and a reminder of women's equality issues around the world.

The Government of Saskatchewan, through the International Women's Day Grant Program, is sponsoring 42 International Women's Day events being held throughout the province. The events are being held by community-based women's organizations to promote and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of women.

"Saskatchewan women have the highest rate of employment among all the provinces," Norris said. "This is encouraging, as economic security and stability help put women on equal footing, but as always there is more to do."

A complete list of the events being sponsored is available on the Status of Women Office website at http://www.aeel.gov.sk.ca/international-womens-day-events.
