MINISTERS MEET IN TORONTO TO DISCUSS ISSUES FACING CANADIAN WOMEN

Released on June 16, 2010

Minister responsible for the Status of Women Office Rob Norris will meet with federal, provincial and territorial counterparts in Toronto this week to discuss important issues facing Canadian women.

"These pan-Canadian meetings offer an important opportunity to address ways of promoting gender equality throughout society," Norris said. "The status of women should be equal to that of men, and we all share in a vision of Canada where women have achieved equality in all aspects of society."

The meetings take place June 16 and 17. Ministers will discuss the economic security of women, human trafficking and engage in a dialogue with representative Aboriginal women leaders on issues related to the First Nations and Métis community.

The Ministers are also having a joint lunch today with the G(irls)20, a gathering of young women from around the world which will focus on how girls and women can be empowered to bring about positive change in developed and developing nations. The G(irls)20 Summit is intended to produce concrete and achievable recommendations for leaders to consider as they tackle global challenges.

Its overarching goal is to bring the economic prowess of girls and women to the attention of G20 leaders as an inclusive, non-partisan initiative. The Summit website is www.girlsandwomen.com.
