WOMEN TO BUILD HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME IN REGINA

Released on December 8, 2010

The Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity Regina are moving forward with plans for a women-led affordable housing project. Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity program that promotes women's leadership and participation in the construction industry, and provides concrete, practical opportunities for women to learn and practice trades skills under the direction of skilled tradespersons.

The Women Build project, a first for Regina, will construct one Habitat for Humanity home for a Regina family. It is expected to begin in Spring 2011. The $50,000 investment by the province in the Women Build project is part of a larger provincial strategy to facilitate housing development, strengthen communities and encourage women's participation in the trades.

"We are very excited about this initiative," Social Services Minister, Minister responsible for the Status of Women and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "Women Build is women taking on the challenge of affordable housing in communities and working together to take action. This project strengthens our government's resolve to help Saskatchewan families in need of safe, affordable housing."

"Women Build is an investment in the future," Government Services Minister Laura Ross said. "It will strengthen Saskatchewan communities and build security for Saskatchewan families. It will increase the number of skilled female tradespersons in Saskatchewan, develop female role models in a male-dominated industry, and encourage women's leadership and participation in trades."

"This is truly a ground-breaking day in Regina with the first ever women build being announced," Habitat for Humanity Regina Director of Fund Development and Communications Trish Bezborotko said. "Another hard-working, low-income family will have the opportunity for homeownership that would not otherwise exist. Habitat for Humanity, commends Minister Draude and the Women Build committee for their vision and initiative on this project. We thank this group of women and look forward to beginning the first ever Women Build in Regina this spring."

The $50,000 in provincial government funding is part of a planned $2 million investment by the province in a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to construct housing for 40 Saskatchewan families. As of November 2010, $1.4 million has been committed to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province.

A key aspect of the partnership allows each Habitat partner family to invest 500 hours in sweat equity to help build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes.
