Despite some job losses in August, Saskatchewan continues to post the lowest unemployment rate in Canada and is one of only two provinces with more people working than a year ago, according to the latest Labour Force Survey released today by Statistics Canada.
There were 521,400 people working in Saskatchewan in August - increase of 1,800 over August 2008. Canada as a whole lost 311,500 jobs during that same 12-month period.
Saskatchewan continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 5.0 per cent (seasonally-adjusted). Regina has the lowest unemployment of any Canadian city at 4.1 per cent while Saskatoon is second-lowest at 4.5 per cent. Canada's unemployment rate is 8.7 per cent.
Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said the latest numbers show Saskatchewan's economy is feeling the effects of the recession but has weathered the worst of it well compared to other provinces.
"It now appears that Canada is slowly beginning to pull out of the recession, and the good news is that Saskatchewan is starting the recovery with the lowest unemployment rate in Canada and more people working than a year ago," Norris said. "I think we can expect to see our economy continue to get stronger as the rest of the Canadian economy starts growing again."
Norris said government actions like lower taxes and record infrastructure spending have helped lessen the blow of the economic downturn in Saskatchewan. There are 4,100 more people working in the construction industry in Saskatchewan over the past year, thanks to significant building activity by both the government and private sector. Other sectors that have shown significant job growth include health care with 4,800 new jobs, and transportation with 4,700 new jobs.
Norris said there are still plenty of career opportunities available in Saskatchewan, with more than 6,200 job openings posted on the Saskjobs.ca website this morning.
