October is Women's History Month in Canada, a time to reflect on and celebrate the impact women have had on Canadian society.
This year's theme is "Saskatchewan Women in Olympic Sports". The theme was inspired by the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games that will be held in Vancouver.
"Saskatchewan is home to many women who have made us proud with their Olympic and Paralympic achievements," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Office Rob Norris said. "I am confident that the number will grow in 2010 as a new group of top Saskatchewan athletes represent Canada in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"The achievements of these athletes will inspire future generations of women to aim high and have confidence in their ability to do whatever they set their mind to, be it in sport or in any other activity."
Norris added that the government is committed to advancing the status of women in Saskatchewan, and equitable participation in all sectors of society and the economy is one of the main goals in addressing women's equality issues.
Women's History Month was declared by Mary Collins, Federal Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, on March 9, 1992. It was established to honour the "Persons Case" of 1929, in which women became recognized as persons under the law.
Although most women were eligible to vote in provincial and federal elections, they were not allowed to be appointed to the Senate of Canada because they were not legally "persons". On October 18, 1929, The Privy Council of Great Britain decreed that under British Common Law, women were legally recognized as "persons" and could be appointed to the Senate.
