SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS EARNING MORE THAN EVER

Released on March 31, 2009

Saskatchewan workers are earning more than ever before, according to a new report released today by Statistics Canada. Average weekly earnings by payroll employees in Saskatchewan are now more than $800 for the first time ever.

The average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan increased by 6.3 per cent (seasonally adjusted) in January 2009 compared to January 2008. That's the second highest increase of any province and nearly twice the national average of 3.2 per cent.

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said the growth in wages shows the resilience of the Saskatchewan economy even in the face of global economic uncertainty.

"Saskatchewan people are earning more, and they're keeping more of what they earn thanks to significant income tax cuts by our government," Norris said. "While our province is not immune to the effects of the downturn, we remain on track for continued growth.

"Our recent budget will keep Saskatchewan's economy strong and steady by reducing property taxes and by investing in much-needed infrastructure projects."

In January 2009, Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings were $802.43, up 1.1 per cent from the previous month (December 2008). Saskatchewan's weekly earnings occupied the third highest position in Canada, after Alberta and Ontario.
