PROVINCE CELEBRATES WOMEN ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Released on March 5, 2009

Saskatchewan recognizes the achievements and contributions of women on International Women's Day (IWD).

"In Saskatchewan, we are proud to join with countries around the world to honour and celebrate all women," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "International Women's Day is an opportunity for us to join together and affirm our commitment to a world in which women are equal members of society."

International Women's Day is celebrated each year on March 8. Events around the world are held on this day to inspire women and increase awareness on topics that affect the status of women. This year, Canada's theme for International Women's Day is "Strong Leadership + Strong Women + Strong World = Equality", a reminder of the importance of supporting both women and men in leadership roles.

"Our government is committed to a stronger Saskatchewan and a better life for all people in our province," Norris said. "We are working to ensure women in our communities have equal opportunity to contribute to and benefit from our growing economy."

Through the International Women's Day Grant Program, the Status of Women Office sponsors community groups and organizations planning events to recognize women. This year's financial contribution will support more than 93 organizations hosting 42 events, with total support reaching more than $21,000.

The government is committed to strengthening relationships with women's groups across the province. To learn more call 306-787-7401.
