Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall today said he is assuming responsibility over the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs. The ministry, formerly the responsibility of Bill Boyd, will now be part of Executive Council.
"This change reflects the critical importance of Saskatchewan's growing relationships internationally and with our partners in Confederation," Wall said.
The ministry is responsible for advancing Saskatchewan's interests nationally and internationally and manages trade policy. This work includes organizing the province's participation at First Ministers' meetings, meetings of the Council of the Federation, the annual Western Premiers' meetings and joint meetings of the Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia cabinets. It includes co-ordinating Saskatchewan's strategic framework for international relations on a cross-government basis and the critical efforts to expand trade in the west, within Canada and globally.
Wall announced that Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff will also serve as Minister responsible for Trade and therefore represent the Premier at meetings of trade ministers.
The Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership will report to Cheveldayoff and Enterprise Saskatchewan has been asked by Premier Wall to consider ways in which Saskatchewan can diversify its export markets, given the current 63 per cent reliance on the U.S. market.
"We must continue to develop other markets for Saskatchewan products within North America but especially off-continent," Wall said. "I will be relying on Minister Cheveldayoff to help provide leadership on this file."
