SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS IN SASKATOON COURTS

Released on January 16, 2009

New perimeter security screening will be implemented in the Saskatoon Provincial Court on Monday, January 19. Over the next several weeks, it will be rolled out in Queen's Bench and Family Court in Saskatoon.

"Safety and security of Saskatchewan residents are priorities for our Saskatchewan Party government," Justice Minister Don Morgan said. "The new security enhancements are designed to provide a safe and secure environment for the judges, staff, counsel, victims, witnesses, accused and the general public."

In order to enter the courts, members of the public will be required to pass through a walk-through metal detector, and if necessary, be examined by hand-held metal detectors. Hand-held luggage will be subject to x-raying and search.

"These security enhancements are only one aspect of the ongoing tenant improvements that are being made to address security and space deficiencies in a number of court houses in the province," Morgan said. "I want to thank the Judiciary, legal community and court staff for their support and understanding as we work to make our courts safe for all who use them."

Perimeter security systems are in place and operational in Prince Albert and Regina. Including all of the Saskatoon court points, over two-thirds of the court appearances in Saskatchewan will be in screened court houses.
