KAIN'S ABEL CONTRACTING PLEADS GUILTY TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Released on December 23, 2009

Kain Boldt, carrying on business as Kain's Abel Contracting in Saskatoon, pled guilty to two charges after violating Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Legislation.

The first charge was for failure to comply with fall protection requirements contravening section 116 of the OHS Regulations; the second charge related to failure to securely cover a floor opening, contravening section 124 of the OHS Regulations. Fines totalled $760.00. A third charge related to failure to wear protective headgear was withdrawn.

The charges were the result of a proactive routine inspection by Occupational Health and Safety officers, who inspect workplaces around Saskatchewan throughout the year.

OHS's has a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance for fall protection, and will continue to make recommendations to the Ministry of Justice when it is revealed that fall protection is missing or not being used and that workers are at risk of falling.

Of the approximately 4,000 workplace inspections that Occupational Health and Safety conducts annually, about 35 per cent have been on construction sites this year. OHS also provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
