GOVERNMENT ELIMINATES 82 AGENCIES, BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

Released on December 9, 2009

The Saskatchewan government today continued its commitment to operating more efficiently by eliminating 82 government agencies, boards and commissions.

"These 82 boards had either completed their work, were no longer active, or their function was being performed elsewhere and they had become redundant," Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz said. "This streamlining exercise is part of our ongoing review of government efficiency and will save taxpayers about $500,000 a year."

Krawetz said some of the boards have not met in years.

"I think this speaks to the need for government to review everything it does from time to time and eliminate anything that is no longer necessary or serving the public," Krawetz said. "While this may not represent a huge cost saving, I think it's an important step we can take to make government more efficient."

The 82 agencies, boards and commissions represent a reduction of nearly 25 per cent of such government entities. Krawetz said many other government boards have also been streamlined by reducing the number of board members, thereby saving more taxpayers' dollars.

"We will continue to look for ways to improve efficiency in every area of government," Krawetz said.
