SASKATCHEWAN CONTINUES TO LEAD CANADA IN EMPLOYMENT GROWTH

Released on November 7, 2008

CORRECTION

17,100 more people working in Saskatchewan compared to one year ago

Saskatchewan continues to have the highest rate of employment growth and the lowest unemployment rate in the country, according to the latest figures released today by Statistics Canada.

Premier Brad Wall said Saskatchewan's strong economy is creating new opportunities that are keeping more of our people in our province and attracting more new people to Saskatchewan.

"One year ago today, our new government was elected with a mandate to build on Saskatchewan's economic momentum," Wall said. "Today's strong job numbers show Saskatchewan is on the right track."

There were 521,600 people working in Saskatchewan in October 2008 - 17,100 more than in October 2007. That's an increase of 3.4 per cent - the fastest growth rate in the country. Saskatchewan's unemployment rate is the lowest in Canada at 3.3 per cent.

Over three quarters of the new jobs were filled by women as employment for women grew by 13,100. Aboriginal employment grew by 2,500 jobs or 7.4 per cent in the past year.

Wall noted there are still plenty of employment opportunities available in Saskatchewan, with more than 8,700 job openings posted today on www.saskjobs.ca.

"Our government is working hard to ensure Saskatchewan's economic momentum continues, and we will keep delivering the message - Saskatchewan is a great place to make a living, and an even better place to make a life," Wall said.
