Saskatchewan continues to set new records for employment growth in 2008, according to the latest labour force survey released today by Statistics Canada.
There were 503,100 people working in Saskatchewan in April 2008. That's an increase of 8,700 from April 2007 and an all-time high for the month of April.
Full-time employment increased by 17,300 jobs. Saskatchewan's unemployment also remains low at 4.5 per cent - tied for third lowest in Canada.
Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said Saskatchewan people are enjoying the benefits of a strong and growing economy.
"Our province is creating new opportunities and building a skilled and talented workforce," Norris said. "It all adds up to a secure and prosperous future for the people of our province."
Statistics Canada also reported the province had the most significant decrease across Canada in the number of residents receiving Employment Insurance benefits in February. Those receiving Employment Insurance dropped 7.1 per cent in February compared to January. Saskatchewan also led the country in year-over-year declines with a 20 per cent decrease from February 2007.
In addition, Saskatchewan people are earning more. The average weekly paycheque in the province was up to $742.10 in February. That's an increase of 4.4 per cent compared to February 2007 - well above the national average of 3.1 per cent.
"Our government's top priority is to improve the quality of life for all people in our province and to sustain the economic momentum," Norris said. "These growing job numbers show we are on the right track and that Saskatchewan is continuing to move forward as a leader in Canada."
