CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Released on March 7, 2008

Each year on March 8, Saskatchewan marks International Women's Day and recognizes the importance of equality for women in all aspects of society.

"In Saskatchewan, we value the contributions and achievements of women as members of our families, communities and economy," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "We are proud to be a part of a global community that celebrates women and envisions a future in which all women are safe from violence and recognized as equal members of society."

Events around the world are held annually on International Women's Day to inspire women and increase awareness on topics that affect the status of women. The day has been observed since the early 1900's and was officially proclaimed by the United Nations in 1975. Today, it has evolved to provide support and recognition to women's issues throughout the decades.

"Our government is committed to building a secure and prosperous future for all people in our province," Norris said. "That means ensuring the women in our province have equal opportunity to live in secure communities, while contributing to and benefiting from Saskatchewan's strong economy."

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour is committed to strengthening relationships with women's groups across the province through its Status of Women Office. T o learn more call 306-787-7401.
