The Government of Saskatchewan has approved the merger of Prairie West and Cypress Hills Regional Colleges effective July 1, 2008. The colleges had announced earlier this year their intent to merge to form a new institution called Great Plains College. The merger will take place within the existing budget allocations.
"The Government supports the merger and I congratulate the colleges for their initiative in looking to better meet the needs of the students and communities they serve," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "The new Great Plains College will continue to provide quality education and skills training for learners in rural communities across western Saskatchewan from Warman to Maple Creek, contributing to Saskatchewan's growing economy."
"This partnership is reflective of our desire to help learners and employers meet the challenges of our ever changing labour market," Great Plains College interim board chair Pat Gerein said. "The new Great Plains College will provide opportunities for students to receive the training and education they need to become active participants in the economy."
Great Plains College will have nine campuses: Warman, Biggar, Kindersley, Rosetown, Outlook, Swift Current, Gravelbourg, Maple Creek and Shaunavon.
The name Great Plains College reflects both the geography and the aspirations of the region. The slogan of the new college is "Education with Energy" to reflect not only the spirit of the new institution but also a renewed focus on the opportunities in the energy sector.
Regional college students are able to receive post-secondary education, trades and skills training and adult basic education in their local communities, which is responsive to local employer and community needs.
