A Saskatchewan delegation is travelling to Manila, Philippines, to attract approximately 300 nurses to the province.
"Recruiting nurses and other health care professionals is a priority of this new government," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "We plan to hire 800 registered nurses in our first term of office, and this trip is an ambitious step toward this goal. We are not going to ignore the fact that we have a nursing shortage in Saskatchewan - we are taking tangible steps to deal with this shortage within a few months of forming a new government.
"Many nurses in the Philippines are looking for work in other countries so we want to give them an opportunity to consider - and choose - Saskatchewan as their new home."
Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Health - Nurse Recruitment and Retention Laura Ross, will accompany staff from five heath regions, including Regina Qu'Appelle, Saskatoon, Prince Albert Parkland, Prairie North and Sunrise. Two Saskatchewan Health recruitment agency officials will also take part.
So far, response to Saskatchewan's recruiting efforts has been strong. The Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region offered jobs to 90 Filipino nurses on a recruitment trip in November 2007.
"We know that finding nurses has become highly competitive," McMorris said. "Filling our nursing needs with home-grown talent is a priority, but we also recognize that, while we are already addressing the need for more training spaces for nurses, we still have to recruit outside the province."
The Saskatchewan delegation's trip is scheduled from February 28 to March 8.
