PROVINCE MARKS EARTH DAY

Released on April 22, 2008

April 22 is Earth Day - a day when people, businesses, communities and governments across Saskatchewan, across Canada and across the globe take action to express their commitment to protecting the environment.

"When we talk about Earth Day, we are really talking about the choices we make each day and the impact those choices have on the environment," Environment Minister Nancy Heppner said. "Our government is committed to making sure the people of Saskatchewan have the support they need to make informed choices that contribute to the health of our environment."

Heppner says government's commitment to the environment is being demonstrated in many ways. For example, this year another $10 million has been committed to green initiative funds, bringing the total to $17.5 million. The money is earmarked for many things including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32 per cent by 2020, through support to projects such as the innovative greenhouse gas reduction technologies being developed in Saskatchewan at the Petroleum Technology Research Centre and the International Test Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture.

The provincial government's commitment to the environment is being demonstrated in other ways. Some examples are: the 20 per cent rebate on SGI insurance premiums and registration fees for hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles; the government's purchase of 440 flex-fuel fleet vehicles and a stipulation that future fleet vehicles must be hybrids or in the top 20 per cent of their class for fuel efficiency; and designing new buildings to comply with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - or LEED - certification standards.

The provincial government is also supporting recycling by increasing funding to SARCAN's beverage container program by $2.9 million, to a total of $13.9 million - an increase that reflects the growing participation of Saskatchewan people in recycling programs across the province.

"We are continuing to build on our already long history of effective recycling programs," Heppner said. "Recycling programs serve as an example of how we can work together to conserve resources and reduce the amount of space needed for landfills."
