HAMILTON ANNOUNCES FUTURE PLANS

Released on May 4, 2007

Regina Wascana Plains Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Doreen Hamilton today announced she will not be seeking re-election in the next provincial election.  She will continue to represent her constituents until then.

“It has been a privilege and a pleasure to represent the people of Regina Wascana Plains for the past 16 years,” Hamilton said.  “I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for putting their trust and faith in me.  I came from a life of community and church service and will look forward to new ways to continue that work.  My family has given a lot so that I could serve in this capacity and we look forward to spending more time together.”

Hamilton was first elected in 1991, and was re-elected in 1995, 1999 and 2003.  In 1998 she was appointed to cabinet as Minister of Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming, Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation, Public Service Commission and Wascana Centre Authority.  From February to October 2001 Hamilton held the portfolios of Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming, SPMC and Minister Responsible for Status of Women.

Currently serving on the Standing Committees on Economy, Privileges and Private Bills, Hamilton has served on the Standing Committees on Communications, Health Care, Municipal Law, Legislative Instruments Committee, Board of Internal Economy and Legislative Secretary for the Premier’s Voluntary Sector Initiative.  In October 2005 she was elected Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committee of the Whole.

“Doreen Hamilton has been a dedicated and caring MLA and a tireless worker on behalf of her constituents and all Saskatchewan people,” Premier Lorne Calvert said.  “Her leadership and contribution as a member of cabinet made a real difference.  In particular, her work with the voluntary sector in Saskatchewan will have a lasting and positive impact on Saskatchewan families and communities.  I welcome her continued contribution over the remainder of this term of government, and I wish her well in her future plans.”
