Released on March 1, 2007
The month of March has been proclaimed as Rural Women’s Month in Saskatchewan.
“Women who live in rural areas of the province have always made a major contribution to Saskatchewan’s economic and social development,” Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said. “Rural women have provided leadership in the development of health care, education and social services in Saskatchewan, in addition to running farms and businesses. It is important that we recognize their achievements, and their current efforts toward building better futures for Saskatchewan people.”
Activities throughout the month will raise awareness and appreciation of women’s role in Saskatchewan’s past and present.
Rural Women’s Month will be observed in conjunction with a variety of events held in March by various women’s groups in communities across the province. These events are organized in association with the United Nation’s International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8. Saskatchewan IWD events are supported through an annual grant program funded by the Status of Women Office of Saskatchewan Labour.
“Our commitment is to recognize women in all of their diversity,” Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joan Beatty said. “Rural women are part of that fabric and it is important that we recognize their needs, as well as their contributions.”
The proclamation of Rural Women’s Month is the result of requests from the Saskatchewan Women’s Institutes, the Partners for Rural Family Support of Humboldt, Rural Women’s Issues Committee of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Representative to the Women’s Advisory Committee of the National Farmers’ Union.
