PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT MINISTERS TACKLE HOUSING ISSUES

Released on August 8, 2007

Minister of Crown Investments Corporation and Responsible for the Status of Women Office Judy Junor, Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates and Justice Minister Frank Quennell today announced details of the provincial government's strategy to respond to the housing concerns of Saskatchewan people.

"Premier Calvert has asked me to look into the housing situation in our cities and I will be working in cooperation with Minister Yates and Minister Quennell," Junor said. "Our Government has heard from citizens and groups that access to affordable housing is of increasing concern. The fact that three ministers are working on these issues exemplifies our commitment to finding solutions."

Beginning Monday, August 13th, consultation meetings will be held in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert with community partners and Community Based Organizations (CBOs). The meetings will focus on current challenges related to affordable and accessible housing in Saskatchewan, and will focus on developing solutions to those challenges.

"Affordable and accessible housing is a cornerstone of what makes Saskatchewan the best place to live, work and raise a family," Junor said. "Our government is committed to working with community partners and members of the CBO sector to find ways to ensure the housing needs of Saskatchewan people are being addressed."

Information gathered at these consultations will be used to develop immediate and long-term solutions by the end of August. In the interim the Government of Saskatchewan is looking at other ways of addressing the situations including the creation of a housing information line and working with cities to ensure rising house prices do not affect the stock of rental units.

"Sask Housing is setting up a toll free housing information line," Yates said. "The housing information line will serve as a central contact for citizens to connect with an individual who can help guide them through their housing needs. This is in addition to the various housing related programs and services offered by the Department of Community Resources."

The housing information line is expected to be operational by the first week of September.

"In addition, I have informed the cities of Saskatoon and Regina of their authority under the Condominium Property Act to temporarily suspend the conversion of rental units to condominiums, pending the results of the government consultations," Quennell said.

"I am looking forward to working with community partners to find solutions," Junor said. "A team approach, involving government and community, is needed to tackle the challenges. In working together, I am confident we can find solutions."
