The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse has announced the winners of its sixth annual Energy and Our Environment poster contest.
The contest invited Saskatchewan Grades five and six students from across the province to create posters with an environmental theme that demonstrate how we can incorporate responsible environmental choices into our daily lives and take action against climate change.
“The Energy and Our Environment poster contest is a great way to educate young people and the public about climate change and the importance of environmental responsibility,” Minister responsible for SaskPower John Nilson said. “It ties in directly to the fifth and six grade school curriculum and encourages even the smallest and most remote schools to participate and use this as part of the lesson plan. It is encouraging to see that so many of our province’s young people are thinking of ways to help the environment.”
This year SaskPower received 589 submissions from students at 39 Saskatchewan schools. First Nations, Public, Catholic and French schools were all represented. About 70 per cent of posters were from rural classrooms and 30 per cent from urban.
A winning poster was selected from each of the schools and four grand prize winners chosen. This year’s grand prize winning posters were created by:
• Brandon Benjamin, St. Francis School, Prince Albert
• Lanette Detillieux, Bruno Central School, Bruno
• Alyshia Hutt, Lampman School, Lampman
• Kayleigh Peardon, Outlook Elementary School, Outlook
The four grand prize winners will each receive a mountain bike and bicycle helmet. In addition, each of the top four winners’ schools will receive educational material on climate change for the school library and a cheque for $250 toward the purchase of trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds. Prizes will be presented at the schools of the four winners before the end of the school year.
