OCTOBER IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Released on September 29, 2006

October is Women's History Month in Canada and the theme - Aboriginal Women: The Journey Forward – commemorates the place of First Nations, Métis and Inuit women in history.

"The role of Aboriginal women has, in years gone by, been frequently overlooked in history," Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joan Beatty said. "This year's celebration of the contribution of these women – both past and present – begins to correct that."

To celebrate Women's History Month from a Saskatchewan perspective, the Status of Women Office has profiled the lives of six Saskatchewan Aboriginal women at www.swo.gov.sk.ca. The women featured are:

• Ava Bear;

• Bev Cardinal;

• Cecile Asham;

• Monica Goulet;

• Leah Dorian; and

• Falynn Baptiste.

"Clearly, there is no way to recognize every significant contribution that Aboriginal women have made to our province, but these women symbolize the important and diverse kinds of contributions made by generations past and present," Beatty added. "Equally as important, they also provide a standard of excellence that future generations can strive to achieve."
