A company has been fined after violating occupational health and safety legislation that could have prevented the serious injury of a worker from a forklift accident in Yorkton last April.
McDiarmid Lumber Ltd. received $20,800 in fines and victim fine surcharges yesterday in Yorkton Provincial Court after pleading guilty to two charges under The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulations.
McDiarmid Lumber Ltd. was convicted for failure to ensure every forklift is equipped with a seatbelt, and that no worker is transported on powered mobile equipment unless seated and secured.
Russell Hutton, a 36-year-old employee, was seriously injured on April 21, 2006 after falling from and being run over by a moving forklift on the worksite. Hutton had been riding on the side of the forklift when he fell and was run over.
"Accidents such as this one remind us how necessary occupational health and safety compliance is and how injuries are prevented through safe practices," Labour Minister David Forbes said.
The Occupational Health and Safety Division inspects approximately 4,500 workplaces annually and provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
