SASKATCHEWAN CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY EVENTS

Released on March 1, 2006

Celebrations and events in communities across Saskatchewan are planned throughout the month of March in recognition of International Women's Day on March 8th.

"International Women's Day is an important date because it provides us with a reason to pause and reflect on the progress that has been made in terms of advancing women's equality, as well as to consider the significant challenges that remain," Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joan Beatty said. "It is also a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions women make at work, in our communities and at home."

This year, 49 International Women's Day events have received grants from Saskatchewan Labour's Status of Women Office. The grants help women's groups and other community-based organizations raise awareness of International Women's Day, promote key women's issues, recognize the contributions and achievements of women in their communities and profile the work that they do.

"Attending International Women's Day events can be a significant learning experience," Beatty said. "Some of the issues that will be addressed include mental, spiritual and physical health; non-traditional occupations; education; poverty; prostitution; international issues; self-care; violence against women; cultural awareness; leadership and decision making; and balancing work and family. Each of these topics contributes to bettering the lives of Saskatchewan women and we are pleased to be able to offer our support."
