SASKPOWER POSTER CONTEST GETS STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Released on April 26, 2006

The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse has announced the winners of its fifth annual Energy and Our Environment poster contest.

The contest invited students in Grades Five and Six from across the province to create posters with an environmental theme that demonstrate how we can incorporate responsible environmental choices into our daily lives and take action against climate change. Some of the creative ideas from this year's winning entries include: Ride a Bus, Save our Resources… It's up to You, We have one Earth, What's it Worth.

"The Energy and Our Environment poster contest is a great way to educate young people and the public about climate change and the importance of environmental responsibility. It ties in directly to the Grade Five and Six school curriculum and encourages even the smallest and most remote schools to participate and use this as part of the lesson plan," Minister responsible for SaskPower John Nilson said. "It is encouraging to see that so many of our province's young people are thinking of ways to help the environment."

This year, SaskPower received 759 submissions from students at 51 Saskatchewan schools. From as far north as Ile-a-la-Crosse to Oxbow in the south, First Nations, city, Catholic and French schools were all represented. About 75 per cent of posters were from rural classrooms and 25 per cent from urban.

A winning poster was selected from each of the schools and four grand prize winners selected.

This year's grand prize-winning posters were created by:

• Miranda Rosin from Douglas Park School in Regina;

• Kayla Gessner from Whitewood School;

• Lindsay Berthelet from Esterhazy High School;

• and Kaleigh Aramenko from Rossignol Elementary Community School in Ile-a-la-Crosse.

The four grand prize winners will each receive a mountain bike and bicycle helmet. In addition, each of the top four winners' schools will receive educational material on climate change for the school library and a cheque for $250 toward the purchase of trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds. Prizes will be presented at the schools of the four winners before the end of the school year.
