WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATED

Released on October 3, 2005

October is Women's History Month. Throughout the month, women's achievements and contributions to Canadian society will be celebrated. It also honours the renowned "Persons Case" of 1929, when women gained legal recognition as "persons" and could sit in the Canadian Senate.

"Women's History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn about the accomplishments and contributions of women past and present," Minister responsible for the Status of Women Deb Higgins said. "It is also an opportunity to recognize the diverse roles women play and the importance of women role models in the quest for women's equality."

This year, Status of Women Canada has selected the theme: Women and War: Contributions and Consequences, in recognition of 2005 as the Year of the Veteran. Saskatchewan Labour's Status of Women Office has produced A Snapshot in Time…Saskatchewan Women During World War II. It provides a glimpse of women's roles in the military and in civilian life.

"Saskatchewan residents have a lot to celebrate this year," Higgins said. "In addition to our centennial, 2005 has been proclaimed the Year of First Nations and Métis Women."

The Status of Women website at www.swo.gov.sk.ca lists a number of materials and events for Women's History Month.
