INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY GRANTS

Released on March 1, 2005

Saskatchewan Labour's Status of Women Office has provided grants totalling $15,000 to support women's groups hosting International Women's Day (IWD) events during the month of March.

"International Women's Day, March 8th, is a key date for women. It is a time women worldwide reflect on the needs of women as they work to achieve equality and justice," Minister responsible for the Status of Women Deb Higgins said. "It is also a time to celebrate the courage of women who overcame obstacles that limited their participation in Canadian society so we could enjoy a better quality of life."

The grant program assists women's groups and other community-based organizations in raising awareness of International Women's Day, promoting key women's issues, recognizing the contributions and achievements of women in their communities and profiling the work that they do.

"It is exciting to have so many groups involved in hosting International Women's Day activities during our Centennial year," Higgins said. "It is one way to pay tribute to so many women who have contributed to making Saskatchewan and Canada what it is today."

Activities include award ceremonies, guest speakers, panel discussions, workshops, candle lighting ceremonies, display exhibitions and much more. Women's issues such as violence against women, multiculturalism, human rights, poverty, women's health, feminism/activism, personal care and empowerment will be addressed. In celebration of Saskatchewan's centennial year, several events focus on women's achievements over the past 100 years and the recognition of local women for their outstanding community service and support.
