RESTRUCTURED SCHOOL DIVISION BOUNDARIES OFFICIAL

Released on April 19, 2005

The 12 new restructured school division are now legal entities.

"The restructuring of school divisions will fundamentally reshape and renew our education system to ensure it is more equitable and more sustainable," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "The implementation of the new school divisions will be a sizable task but also an opportunity for individuals to make a difference in education in their communities."

The new school divisions must legally exist in order to hold the elections for new boards of education on June 15th, 2005. The existing school divisions and elected boards will continue to operate until January 2006 when the transition to the new division structure takes effect.

The June election will determine who will sit on the boards of education for the 12 new restructured school divisions. Other school divisions that are not restructuring will hold elections in October of 2006 as part of the regular municipal election cycle.

"It is very important that people participate in this election both by standing for office and voting for the person they feel will best represent them," Thomson said. "This is an exciting time to be involved in education in our communities."

The new school divisions will have comparable tax bases, student populations and access to resources. Property taxes levied in the region will stay in the region and boards will continue to be democratically elected and responsible to the local communities they represent.
