In celebration of Saskatchewan's 100th birthday, the Province today launched the Centennial Speakers Bureau, a dynamic centennial project that will bring alive the stories of Saskatchewan achievers and our province's history.
"Saskatchewan is the birthplace and home of many individuals who have contributed greatly to both Saskatchewan's and Canada's social, cultural, political and economic development. As we look to a new century in Saskatchewan, it seems appropriate that Saskatchewan's history and its peoples' successes should be shared," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said.
The Speakers Bureau theme, Saskatchewan Achievers: Real People, Real Stories, speaks to Saskatchewan citizens' record of innovation, excellence and achievement.
Developed as a unique learning resource for the centennial year, Speakers Bureau services are available at no cost to Saskatchewan's schools, public libraries and public post-secondary institutions.
Centennial Speakers Bureau participants include:
·LuAnn Mitchell-Halter, entrepreneur and former Mitchell's Gourmet Foods CEO;
·Hayley Wickenheiser, Olympic champion;
·Richie Hall, Saskatchewan Roughrider assistant coach.
Some of the other participants include Randy Lundy, poet and professor at the First Nations University of Canada; Gail Bowen, award winning mystery author of the Joanne Kilbourn series; Virginia Thompson, executive producer of renegadepress.com and Corner Gas; Arthur Slade, Governor General Award winning author and Chester Knight, Juno award winning musician.
Information kits will be distributed in mid-April to schools, public libraries and public post-secondary institutions. The speaker recruitment process is still underway and the list of available speakers will be updated weekly on Saskatchewan Learning's web site at www.sasked.gov.sk.ca
