FIRST SASKWATER UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO REGINA STUDENT

Released on October 22, 2004

SaskWater has awarded its first University scholarship to University of Regina Administration student Elizabeth Nguyen.

The scholarship is the first award from the SaskWater Scholarship Fund introduced in May 2004. The scholarship fund is a $30,000 award agreement with the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan. The fund provides one $3000 annual scholarship at each University to deserving diversity candidates pursuing degrees in Administration or Engineering.

"The most unique aspect of the SaskWater Scholarship Fund is that it is geared toward upper year students who have completed two years toward their degree in good academic standing," Minister responsible for SaskWater Peter Prebble said.

Prebble recently had the opportunity to meet Elizabeth at the University. "Elizabeth is an outstanding fourth year student pursuing an Administration Degree in Accounting. Student funding is typically less accessible in the latter years of study. The SaskWater scholarship has been designed to help students like Elizabeth complete their education goals," Prebble said.

Diversity candidates are members of Education Equity groups which include persons of Aboriginal Ancestry, including Status Indian, Metis or Inuit descent; women; persons with disabilities and members of a visible minority.

The University of Saskatchewan scholarship will be awarded in early 2005.
