SASKATCHEWAN TO HOST NEXT MEETING OF MINISTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR STATUS OF WOMEN

The annual meeting of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women ended with an invitation to come to Saskatchewan in 2005.

Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Deb Higgins invited her colleagues from across Canada to visit Saskatchewan during the province's Centennial celebrations. The 24th annual meeting of the Ministers will take place in Regina September 21st – 23rd, 2005.

At the meeting just ended in St. John's, Newfoundland, Higgins shared The Action Plan for Saskatchewan Women – this province's vision for achieving equality for women – with the other ministers. Ministers will receive a report on progress made in implementing the Action Plan at the meeting next year.

At the St. John's meeting, which ended October 1st, the Ministers focused priority attention on violence prevention for Aboriginal women. They also agreed to:

· Raise awareness on the gendered aspects of caregiving and its implications for women's equality

·Continue to liaise on issues of shared interest related to women's health and well-being

· Prepare an updated Statistical Profile on Violence Against Women.
