INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATED

Released on March 1, 2004

Women's groups in Saskatchewan and throughout Canada are holding a wide variety of events this month in recognition of International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th.

"International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to families, communities and society," Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Deb Higgins said. "It is also a day when people throughout the world take time to celebrate women's achievements, to reflect on challenges that lie ahead, and to renew commitments to women's equality."

This year, many IWD events in Saskatchewan are made possible through a grant program sponsored by Saskatchewan Labour's Status of Women Office. The grant program assists women's groups and other community-based organizations to promote key women's issues, recognize the contributions and achievements of women in their communities, and profile the work that they do.

"The importance of International Women's Day was confirmed as a priority with our release of the Action Plan for Saskatchewan Women," Higgins said. "Our government is committed to the annual support of International Women's Day events."

Activities sponsored include educational panels and workshops on women's issues such as violence against women, multiculturalism, immigration, and education; speakers on healthy living, leadership, empowerment and disability issues; and events that honour and bring together women in the community.
