SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED

Released on March 28, 2003

Students, alumni, teachers and guests gathered in Yorkton today for the official opening of the new Sacred Heart High School. The Saskatchewan government contributed $6.1 million toward the construction of the new school. The total cost of $11.4 million was split with the school division.

"When we upgrade or build new schools, we are investing in students and in the future of Saskatchewan," Deputy Premier and Yorkton MLA Clay Serby said, on behalf of Learning Minister Judy Junor. "The new Sacred Heart High School will ensure the longstanding tradition of quality education continues in Yorkton."

The new school includes many high quality features, such as a 450-seat performing arts theatre; an oversized gymnasium and fitness room; a state-of-the-art communications system that integrates computers, the intercom, audio visual and multimedia systems throughout the school; and a total of 150 computers located in three labs, the resource centre and in every classroom.

"I am very excited about the new Sacred Heart High School," Yorkton Roman Catholic Separate School Division Chair Brenda Kondra said. "The School Division is proud of the school and its history. It will serve the students and community well, now and in the future."

The new school replaces the original facility, which began as Sacred Heart Academy, founded by the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate in 1917. The Department announced funding to begin designing the new school three years ago. Students and teachers moved into the new building on February 24th.

With the $40 million in its K-12 capital budget, Saskatchewan Learning funded approximately 140 school construction, renovation or upgrading projects in communities around the province this fiscal year. The Centenary Fund, which was announced in 2000, provides an additional $20 million over four years for K-12 school facilities.

"This project is part of the government's commitment to invest in modern, well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students," Serby added.
