Saskatchewan ended a strong 2002 for the economy with another record-breaking month for job numbers.Statistics Canada figures released today show 484,200 people working in the province in December (seasonally unadjusted). That's the highest December on record for jobs, beating the previous record set three years ago and an increase of 25,000 jobs over December 2001.
Saskatchewan has now posted five straight months of record job numbers and eight consecutive months of job increases over previous year figures. Saskatchewan also had the highest percentage increase in job growth year over year for the third straight month.
"Our province surged forward in 2002, with strong job numbers that reflect a diverse and healthy economy," Industry and Resources Minister Eldon Lautermilch said. "Our economic momentum is a tribute to Saskatchewan businesses – businesses that are seizing opportunities, developing new products and services, and, above all, creating jobs for Saskatchewan people."
Today's report also provided the jobs picture for the entire year. Saskatchewan had an annual average of 482,000 people working in 2002, an increase of 9,700 jobs over 2001. Last year was the second highest on record for the number of people working in the province.
December's figures showed an increase last month in non-agricultural employment of 18,800 jobs compared to December 2001. Agriculture was up 6,000 jobs over the previous December.
Other indicators also show the economy's strength. Manufacturing shipments, retail and department store sales, new vehicle sales, urban housing starts, potash sales and natural gas production are all up, and social assistance caseloads continue to decline. Last year in Saskatchewan a record number of gas wells were drilled.
Saskatchewan had the third lowest unemployment rate in Canada at 5.3 per cent in December (seasonally unadjusted), down 0.5 percentage points from last year, and well below the national rate of 7.1 per cent.
"Our job numbers will obviously fluctuate each month, but our solid growth over the last eight months shows we roared back from a tough 2001," Lautermilch said. "Our economic foundation is strong, and has allowed our businesses and communities to explore new value-added opportunities in all our major sectors.
"Saskatchewan companies are creating the jobs, and our government is making the key infrastructure investments and tax cuts that keep our business climate competitive. Our future is wide open, for a prosperous, flourishing Saskatchewan."
